Health stakeholders in Kiambu have been urged to create a forum to discuss ways of reducing HIV and Aids infections among children in the county.
The Kiambu governor’s wife, Philomena Kabogo, said the campaign should be aimed at completely eliminating new HIV infections in children.
“There is need to create awareness in the rural areas on the importance of reducing mother to child transmission. This can only happen if every child is born in a health facility,” she said.
“I also urge health workers to form strong teams that can reach out to every childbearing mother. We need to reduce transmission by 50 percent come 2015, 75 percent by 2020 and finally zero in 2030."
The county first lady also urged health providers to ensure that mobile clinics reach the hardest-to-reach parts of Kiambu to offer maternal care to mothers in the rural areas.
“I am calling upon the Ministry of Health in this area to carry out research aimed at revealing the HIV and Aids situation in the county.
“You must also come up with ways of ensuring that preventive measures are taken against new infections, especially among the youth," she added.
Dr Jonah Mwangi, the county executive for health, said the county will spend more than Sh325 million in the five-year-term to put up modern maternity centres.
