Director of Criminal Investigations office has yet again been thrown to defense following claims by blogger Robert Alai that his arrest was politically instigated.
On Tuesday, Alai was charged with treason at Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi before being released on Sh300, 000 cash bail. He had spent 13 days in remand.
“The accused must note that the offense is serious and attract a penalty of a life sentence,” Magistrate Francis Andayi said.
In a tweet, Alai claimed that his arrest was political, adding that DCI officers confiscated his phone to check whether or not he has been in contact with DP William Ruto.
He also claimed that when they established that he doesn't communicate with DP Ruto, they opted to use media propaganda to antagonise him.
"The current arrests are targeting people thought to be close to DP @WilliamsRuto. In the whole of my interrogation, I was NEVER asked anything to do with terrorism. It was all "who do you communicate within Ruto's office" etc... The arrest of @OleItumbi is WRONG!" he said.
"They found that I don't even communicate with DP Ruto and so when they couldn't find anything to charge me with, they thought of using photos of face charges with terror and using the media for psychological warfare. We will win. Mtashangaa. Using ATPU for political purposes," he added.
On Wednesday, former State House Digital Communication Director Dennis Itumbi was also arrested. He's a close ally of DP William Ruto.
In recent weeks, Dr Ruto has accused DCI team of being used by certain politicians to intimidate him. The DCI George Kinoti has often dismissed the claims.
