In a funeral eclipsed with succession politics on Friday at Nyanturago, leaders from Gusii community backed Dr Matiang'i in the ongoing succession battle.

Taking advantage of Mr Odinga's presence, Mr Onyonka said for Matiang'i's star to continue shining, he should closely work with the former PM.

"Without that man (Raila), there will be no country. Dr Matiang'i, please stay close to that man, he loves you. He knows where the country is going," he said amid cheers.

"Abagusii people are everywhere in the country, we can get the top seat. Those threatening to kill us if we don't vote for them, forget, we are ready for you," added Onyonka.

Over 20 leaders had accompanied Mr Odinga to the burial of Dr Hezron Manduku, the former MP for Nyaribari Masaba. Several MPs endorsed Dr Matiang'i.

But while addressing the crowd, Dr Matiang'i slowed down the charged politicians, only chosing to limit himself within service delivery.

The powerful minister said he's ready to work with all leaders, adding that Raila is an instrumental politician in peace and reconciliation in the country.

"I will not declare anything today as you want. I am in touch with our governors. We shall deliver services. This Mzee (Raila), is a true friend to Abagusii community," he declared.

A number of MPs allied to Deputy President William Ruto, who attended the funeral, changed tune and backed Building Bridges Initiative.
