Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has hit out at the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) George Kinoti and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji over the arrest and detention of his Starehe counterpart Charles Njagua alias Jaguar.
Addressing journalists at Milimani law Courts on Friday, Owino accused the DCI and the DPP of violating Jaguar’s constitutional rights.
The legislator claimed that there is no evidence that Jaguar made xenophobic remarks, adding that his statement was taken out of context.
“It is wrong for the DCI to arrest a Member of Parliament, charge him in court and later ask the same court for time to go and collect evidence,” Owino said.
The lawmaker noted that the case against Jaguar is weak because there is no evidence and witnesses.
He accused the DCI of treating Members of Parliament like 'chicken', claiming that Jaguar’s Wednesday arrest was humiliating.
Jaguar will spend another five days in police cells to allow for more investigations into his alleged xenophobic remarks.
On Friday, the court granted detectives three working days to complete investigations against him.
The prosecution had sought to have the lawmaker detained for 14 days at Kamukunji Police Station to allow for completion of the investigation against the youthful lawmaker.
Milimani Senior Resident Magistrate Sinkiyan Tobiko, however, ordered the MP be detained at Kileleswha Police Station.
