The families of the Canadian passengers in the Ukraine International Airlines that crashed in Iran after being hit by missiles will be paid 25,000$, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has reported.
This was announced by Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau, who said that the cash would help the families in transporting the bodies of their loved ones and making funeral arrangements.
He assured that the cash would be given to the families in the coming days and also said that money from the Iranian government would not be taken by the Canadian government but also given to the families.
"I want to be clear: We expect Iran to compensate these families," Trudeau said in a press conference as quoted by CNN. "But I have met them (the families). They can't wait for weeks. They need support now. We haven't looked at what the full compensation would end up looking like from Iran. But I can assure you that any money from Iran to the victims would go straight to them -- it wouldn't be to reimburse the Canadian government, " he added.
Iran accepted responsibility for the shoot-down of the plane after a series of spirited denials.
It said that the plane was hit by missiles fired by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards by mistake.
