Governors on Monday re-elected Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya as their Chairman for the next one year during a gathering in Nairobi on Monday.
The county chiefs, however, did not go to the ballot as initially expected given that they reached a consensus. Oparanya was due to face with Ali Roba of Mandera.
Murang'a Governor Mwangi Iria retained the Vice-Chairman position while Prof Kivutha Kibwana retained Chief Whip post.
Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa hailed the governors for showing exemplary leadership, adding that the government will continue working closely with Counties.
"I congratulate the team given the mandate to head the Council of Governors for the next one year. The COG leadership plays a critical role in improving the intergovernmental relations for us to realize our vision as a Country," he said.
Before the elections, Wa Iria had lauded the county chiefs for always approaching the polls with sobriety, without necessarily being guided by political emotions.
"The Council of Governors is known for its perfect history of holding the #COGelections with decorum and a very smooth transition," he said.
Oparanya will exit the council next year since one cannot serve for two terms. He took the seat from Turkana Governor Josephat Nanok last year.
