Speaking during the event, Uhuru's longtime foe turned friend answered people who have been asking him why he has been quiet lately.

"You know politics has its own miracles. These people nowadays ask me why I have gone silent a lot. (Unajua siasa ina maajabu yake. Hawa watu siku izi huniuliza wewe governor umenyamaza sana)," he said.

"And I want to tell them we have moved away from the era of talking at each other into the area of talking with each other," added the governor.

Joho's silence came immediately after President Uhuru and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga's handshake that cooled the political tension in the country after the disputed 2017 general elections.

His attacks on Uhuru and his Deputy President William Ruto stopped in support of the handshake.

The function was attended by various leaders including Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha and his Transport counterpart James Macharia.

Some leaders from the region boycotted the event. Mvita MP Abdulswamad among others missed the event noting that the Sh27 billion port terminal should be entirely owned by the government unlike plans to have it jointly run by KNSL and MSC.
