African Union Infrastructure Development envoy Raila Odinga has called for increased development projects along Lake Victoria, as a source of employment.
Speaking in Siaya County on Sunday, the former Prime Minister said blue economy is currently the only job solution for the nation's growing population.
He stressed on the need for establishment of new water investments, failure to which the nation will have to deal with economic insecurity in the future.
"This is why the blue economy drive is key since it seeks to promote economic growth, social inclusion, improvement of livelihoods and environmental sustainability," he said.
He said this is the reason behind the revival of the Kisumu Port, which is, however, yet to be launched to begin operations, four months after the initial set launch date.
The ODM leader said plans are under way to revive active inland water transport to create more opportunities in the lake, adding that the lake has been underutilised.
"This is because people here, or fishermen or marine investors only use it for boat transport and fishing activities, leaving other economic potentials unexplored," he added.
The Kisumu Port was refurbished at a cost of Sh3 billion, and aims at enhancing water transportation across the three countries sharing the lake.
