Speaking at the White House while signing the deal, Trump hailed the agreement as the biggest ever.

"Today, we are taking a momentous step towards a future of fair and reciprocal trade. Together we are righting the wrong of the past, " the US president said as quoted by the Guardian.

The signing of the deal came after months of tension between the two biggest world economies.

Trump had before the deal accused the Chinese of unfair trade practices, including currency devaluation to gain a competitive advantage.

As a way of retaliating, the US president ordered goods from China to be slapped with more tariffs, a move that did not go well with the Chinese.

The New York Times reported that the deal would open up Chinese markets to American companies, and help cool off a trade war that experts agreed was economically damaging.

Trump will be hoping that the development will boost his chances of re-election, even as he battles an impeachment process initiated by members of the Democratic party.
