A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to death after being accused of stealing Sh200 from a woman in Kibera.
John Oshea Kiplangat will face the hangman after the prosecution successfully convinced court that the man forcefully robbed one Gladys Cherotich in Kibera slums using a toy gun.
Kibera Senior Principal Magistrate Faith Mutuku during the ruling said witnesses who saw the accused rob the woman off the money presented similar statements and said she was convinced he used force to take away the money.
"The penalty for robbery with violence is death," Judge Mutuku said as she read her final verdict to Kiplangat who pensively stood at the dock.
"But you can appeal within 14 days."
According to eyewitnesses, Kiplangat is said to have waylaid the woman before pulling out the toy gun from his trouser pocket threatening to shoot her.
He then ordered her to surrender all the money she had.
Witnesses who gave statements in court said they feared confronting the accused as they feared he would shoot them.
They said they did not know that he had a fake gun.
Cherotich reported the incident to police who later arrested Kiplangat.
