Former Othaya MP Mary Wambui's appointment as the National Employment Authority chairperson via a Gazette notice dated October 14, 2019, has been suspended.
The blow to the former MP was delivered on Wednesday by a Nairobi court after a petition challenging her appointment was filed.
“That the 3rd respondent (Wambui) has on several occasions personally admitted that she possesses a limited educational background which for all intents and purposes makes her unqualified and unsuitable to conduct the affairs of the chairperson of National Employment Authority in light of the specialist academic and professional requirements that were intended to be possessed by the chairperson of the said authority,” the petition reads as reported by Citizen.
The suspension comes after Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association challenged her suitability for the post. Led by Nairobi County Senator Johnson Sakaja, the leaders opine that the appointee is not qualified under the policy, best practice and the law.
“There was a dream that informed the creation of the National Employment Authority. The appointment of Hon. Mary Wambui goes against the provisions of Section 10(2) of the NEA act. I have asked her to politely decline this appointment. Further, I have instructed lawyers to file a petition to quash this appointment,” Sakaja wrote to newsrooms before the petition.
