National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officers are back on the roads 10 months after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the agency to withdraw its officers from roads in the country.
The officers are back due to the increased cases of road accidents.
The decision to have them back was reached after consultations with Interior CS Fred Matiang'i. The move is aimed at curbing cases of accidents in the country.
The officers have now been directed to join traffic officers in a crackdown on unruly drivers that began this week.
According to NTSA, the number of accidents has increased by 12 per cent since last year.
In the last twelve months at least 2,326 people have lost their lives in road accidents.
The officers will conduct impromptu checks on vehicles along the Nyeri-Nairobi highway.
The NTSA officers will be offering technical support while traffic police will do the enforcement work like arresting those found flouting traffic rules.
"Our job will be to guide the police on the offences and traffic malpractices to look out for. We cannot arrest or order a vehicle to stop. NTSA is there only to support," an NTSA official told the Daily Nation.
Early this year the agency was under pressure as motorist called for its disbandment over impunity and corruption.
On Tuesday, the agency suspended nine Saccos for operating fewer cars than recommended.
Among them include Fig Komba, City Tram, Mwamba Sacco, Marvellous Travellers, MNGN Sacco among others.
