Those who were fully behind the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) push have been caught unawares, Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen has said.
This comes amid confusion in the political scene, with some of those who were supporting the initiative now opposing it and its former opposers now endorsing it.
Murkomen now says that the group that was behind the push has realized that its details do not favour their personal political interests, hence the sudden change of heart.
He terms this the reason behind their new push that the BBI report be subjected to a referendum, hoping to have their amendment demands brought on board by clever means.
"Those who wanted the BBI hace caught a cold as they hoped to use it to get to power. They will now fight it in an attempt to push for a referendum (Wale walitaka BBI report sasa wamepata baridi kwa sababu walitaka kuitumia kupata uongozi. Sasa wataipiga sana walitaka iende referendum)," he said on Radio Citizen on Monday morning.
The Elgeyo Marakwet Senator found it laughable that the group, led by ODM leader Raila Odinga, is pushing for a referendum to amend issues that don't need the same.
He pointed out that the constitution is clear on what needs a referendum and what can be passed through the parliament, adding that the parliament is the way to go on the current issue.
"Amendments touching on devolution, roles of the parliament and integrity are the ones which must be taken to the citizens, this report does not touch on these issues (Mambo yanayogusia ugatuzi, kazi za bunge na integrity lazima ziende kwa mwananchi, hii ripoti haiguzi haya)," he added.
The senator also added that the referendum, which he termed unnecessary, will only subject the already suffering Kenyans to an expensive expenditure amounting to billions.
But Raila and team have insisted that they will only support a referendum and nothing else.
