Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino has not forgotten the difficult childhood he went through before making it to where he is today.
The first-term MP has on various occasions revealed to the public how he was forced to help his mum sell chang’aa (illicit brew) in Kisumu’s Nyalenda estate in order to make ends meet.
Speaking to Citizen TV’s Lilian Muli on Friday, the vocal MP said he saw his mother being beaten by police as she went about her illicit brew business.
“The policemen were so powerful. And you see it was more of a police State where people were even being canned. So I saw my mum being whipped as she was selling chang’aa and up to now what I saw actually created a serious mark in my mind,” said the MP.
He said that his mother resorted to the illicit brew business to fend for her family after his father died. Babu Owino then went to Kisumu Boys High School and later the University of Nairobi before venturing into politics.
He was elected on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party ticket in 2017. He has previously stated that his dream is to become the president of Kenya.
