A primary schoolboy has died in Kiambu’s Ngewa area after being hit by a speeding motorbike. Witnesses say that the boy, who died on the spot, was closing the road together with his elder brother when the incident occurred. The bodaboda operator reportedly fled after the incident. “The boy was with his elder brother who saw the speeding motorbike coming and run for safety, leaving the young boy behind,” said James Waweru, a witness. “The motorbike came running on him before speeding off,” he added. Another witness, Susan Njoki, said: “I heard a loud bang behind me, only to see a young boy wriggling on the ground. The motorbike rider pretended to be turning back to pick the boy but escaped on noticing the surging crowd around the scene of accident.” Efforts to save the boy’s life were unsuccessful as he died right on the scene. The cyclist had not yet been arrested by the time of going to press. This incident comes in the wake of increased motorbike accidents, following the rise in popularity of bodaboda as a cheap means of transport. A recent report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) suggests that many of the bodaboda riders do not have any formal training from driving schools as many opt to be trained by the existing cyclists. Major hospitals across the country have of late opened special units to attend to victims arising from the bodaboda accidents.
