Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho on Monday welcomed President Uhuru Kenyatta to Mombasa where he is set to flag off the inaugural shipment of Kenya's crude oil.
Uhuru was accompanied by several officials from the government during the tour to the Coast region including Petroleum Cabinet Secretary John Munyes.
The commander in chief of the armed forces is also expected to receive the 3rd cohort of Seafarer recruits.
According to officials, the government will ship 200,000 barrels, which marks Kenya’s entry into nations exporting oil.
The crude oil, which is mined from the Turkana Oil mines by the Tullow Oil, will be exported to Malaysia.
The oil has been purchased by the Chinese company, Chemchina. The oil has been sold at the cost of Sh1.2 billion.
Uhuru, who is completing his second and final term in government, said that he is excited to be President at the time when the government is exporting the oil.
“We are now an oil exporter. Our first deal was concluded with 200,000 barrels at a price of 12 million US dollars,” President Kenyatta said last month.
It is estimated that the Kenya’s fields in Turkana hold up to 560 million barrels of oil. The oil will be minded until 2022.
