Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru has opened up on whether the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) needs reforms or not.
Speaking on Wednesday during tan interview on KTN, Waiguru appeared to agree that the IEBC requires some changes.
She said that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) recommended institutional changes and one of those to be looked at was the electoral body.
"If you look at the document, it talks about institutional changes, and one of those institutions that must be looked at is the IEBC," the Kirinyaga governor said. (19:49-19:56)
IEBC was at the centre of an electoral dispute in 2007 pitting the opposition against the governing Jubilee party in the lead up to the 2017 elections.
Then presidential candidate former prime minister Raila Odinga blamed the IEBC for allegedly being used to bungle elections.
In fact, Mr Odinga boycotted the repeat 26, October 2017 presidential election, saying that he would only participate in an election preceded by reforms at the electoral body.
IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati downplayed the prospect of him and his team being hounded out of the office on the basis of the BBI report, saying that he would be around until after the next general election.
“I haven’t had time to read the BBI report, but all I can say is that we came in office in 2017 January, our term of office ends in January 2023. So, as far as I’m concerned, our contract is on, and I’m not really worried about that," Chebukati said as quoted by Citizen Digital.
