A medic attached to the African Medical Research Institute (AMref) has warned urban dwellers against high rate consumption of junk foods.
Dr Jane Muriuki, who is currently undertaking a research on ‘Preventive Measures and Causes of Life-limiting Diseases in Kenya’, said the high rate of consumption of junk foods popular in urban centers has greatly contributed to chronic diseases like diabetes, kidney failures and cancer.
“Some of these diseases can be prevented if our people eat responsibly. People should avoid consuming a lot of junk foods but should consider traditional foods, which are disease preventive in nature,” said Muriuki.
She further added that urban dwellers should consult nutritionists in order for them to change their eating habits that are risky to health.
Muriuki also observed that according to research urban dwellers have short life spans as compared to rural people, because they contract and suffer from diseases that are commonly caused by their eating habits.
