In order to curb the practice, she has given a directive to ensure that water supply in the area is restored.

“I condemn the intolerable and immoral practice of sex for water in our county. I have therefore directed the respective minster to ensure the Awasi water supply is up and running by next week”, she said.

Earlier there were reports in the media that women and young girls had to wake up early and walk for a long distance in search of water. In avoiding the long distances they had to ask for sexual favours in exchange for water in Awasi town.

Odinga was speaking during the launch of the Kisumu county gender mainstreaming strategic plan in Kisumu by the Gender Technical working Group.

On gender, Odinga gave her assurance that she had made a personal commitment in ensuring there was equality among all residents of Kisumu County and her government has allocated funds to support the course.

“I am committed to ensuring there is equality in our county and there is budget allocations set to support this course,” Odinga said.

She added that her government was keen in uplifting the minority groups through equitable sharing of resources sensitising them on their rights as enshrined in the constitution.

She highlighted the fact that Kisumu County government is the only one with the highest number  of women serving in it and  they were setting the pace for other counties in ensuring gender equality becomes a reality across the country.
