The African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA) in Nakuru has rubbished calls for a referendum terming it as a waste of time and resources by selfish individuals.

Speaking at the Bishop Mureithi cathedral church grounds, Archdeacon Paul Kariuki said that the AIPCA and its leadership is against the push for a referendum. He said the church is behind the government as it works towards fulfilling its promises to the people of Kenya it made during last year’s hotly contested general elections.

“We support the president and his government. The top leadership of the church is against this referendum. This is not the time to call for such things. We have requested our followers not to heed to the calls for a referendum,” said Kariuki.

At the same time, Mosop MCA George Mwaura said that the country had just completed a bruising election and this is not the time for a referendum.

“Let us give the new government some time and see what it is capable of doing. It is time for development not politicking,” said Mwaura.

The service had been attended by six deacons drawn from the diocese and a sizeable number of faithful.
