Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki has weighed in on reports that the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) is appealing for donations to fund the construction of a palliative care centre.
Speaking at his office to members of the press on Wednesday, the CS said that it was a good thing that the country's largest referral facility was raising resources to build the facility.
She said that funding from the government alone would not be enough.
"The question of Kenyatta National Hospital raising resources to construct what we call the Hope Centre is a palliative centre for people who are completely at that end, out of cancer..," she said.
"I think it is a good thing and we should support that," the cabinet secretary added.
She rejected the suggestion that the plea for donations was an indication that the government was not channelling resources to the hospital.
In a Facebook post, KNH issued an MPESA PayBill number to members of the public who wish to be part of the initiative.
"Because of your support, patients receiving outpatient cancer treatment at KNH will not have to sleep on cold hard floors or benches. They will have a roof over their head, warm decent meals and they will be closer to the treatment facilities. This will greatly improve clinical outcomes by enabling completion of cancer treatment," the KNH Facebook post read.
