The county assembly characterized the Nakuru County Maternal Bill on Newborn Child Health as ‘’ dead on arrival.’’ Joel Maina Kairu who is the speaker of the county assembly altered the bill by stating that the Bill was not stated to public participation.

“This House was not sensitized on this Bill. Last week, it was brought in the House without giving members enough copies,” Kairu was quoted by Nation.

“The objectives of the bill are against the Constitution and I approve its withdrawal,” he added

His advice was that MCAs to be involved in the bill before being reestablished to the assembly. He noted that the bill bears good things in concern to maternal health.

“The external forces behind this Bill should desist from sponsoring it. This House will not be used to further other peoples’ sinister motives,” ruled  Kairu.

This bill comes after residents of Nakuru County resisted it on social media.

“This Bill has glaring loopholes. It seeks to introduce abortion through the back door while sugar-coating it as termination of pregnancy. Nakuru has been known as a county of firsts and we are not ready to be the first county to legalize abortion,” said Kabazi MCA Dr Peter Mbae.

MCA Catherine from Molo interpreted the bill as ‘’killer of future generations.’’ MCA Irene Chebichi from Soin denoted that the bill would increase teenage pregnancies.
