Al-Shabaab militants on Tuesday recaptured strategic El-Gelow town in Middle Shebelle region moments after security forces left, spokesman Abu Musab confirmed.
Forces from AMISOM and Somali National Army liberated the town few months ago after hours of fighting with security forces, Garowe Online reports.
But on Tuesday, it's not clear why security forces withdrew from the strategic town, which is located around 30 kilometers from the capital Mogadishu.
"We did not use a lot of force. We were however prepared to take on the enemy. This town is important to all of us. We shall continue fighting," he said.
The Al-Shabaab militants had been using the town as a major revenue source, often collecting millions in form of forcefully imposed tax on residents.
AMISOM troops have in the past cut off the tax collection centers by liberating the towns from the Al-Qaida associates Al-Shabaab, which could yield millions in a month.
On Monday, Kenya maintained that her troops will continue staying in Somalia, with Chief of Defense Forces General Samson Mwathethe arguing that the soldiers will always respect missions.
"We shall continue helping Somalia to restore peace given that it's one of our mission as a force," he said during the celebrations of KDF Day at Lang'ata Barracks.
Kenya first deployed her soldiers in Somalia in 2011 and joined UN and AU mission a year later. The troops have liberated several towns among them Kismayo since then.
