Residents of Sariti village in Kinangop have decried a new mode of theft in the area, where the thieves are now taking to the cowsheds to milk their cows at night.
They say that the rather funny theft began about two weeks, before which they used to wake up to stolen livestock, which saw them lose 17 dairy cows to the suspected thieves.
Among the victims is Priscilla Njeri who says that she initially thought that the same was as a result of weather conditions.
"I thought it was due to the weather conditions until several other neighbours complained of the same. We sought an advise from a local veterinary officer who ruled otherwise,” she is quoted by the Standard.
The farmers said that their suspicion was confirmed last Tuesday when two men were spotted by one of the farmers carrying buckets of milk in the wee hours of the night.
This is after the farmers resolved to keep vigil at night to guard their animals, with Joseph Githinji who was gairding his two cows suspecting that the intention was the cows.
“Their intention was to milk my cows but immediately I raised alarm, they fled for safety. Upon searching at the farm, I found a jerrican full of milk,” he told the paper.
Nyandarua County Commissioner Boaz Cherutich who said that he has dispatched officers to patrol the area and investigate the issue.
The people have also claimed that the thieves have been smearing the udders with mid when through with their milking.
