Celebrated lawyer and Rarieda lawmaker Otiende Amollo now says that the nation could go for a referendum by June next year.
Speaking on Wednesday, the MP threw his weight behind the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), which has been busy collecting opinions from Kenyans in all the 47 counties.
According to the close ally of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) boss Raila Odinga, the nation could go for a referendum by June next year, courtesy of the BBI.
“A supposition that we’ll be looking at a referendum next year is a logical and legal one,” he said, in an interview with Tony Gachoka on KTN's Point Blank on Wednesday.
He also took a swipe at the Punguza Mizigo initiative, which has been on high gear lately, and which also seeks to subject the nation to constitutional changes.
Led by Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuru Aukot, the initiative seeks to among others, reduce the number of parliamentary seats and introduce a nonrenewable seven-year presidential term.
However, Amollo, a senior opposition lawyer, now wants to know who the former presidential aspirant consulted before coming up with the proposals in his bill.
He opined that Aukot just sat down, came up with the proposals and began pushing, without considering what is best for Kenyans. The vocal MP termed Aukot's bid as misleading and overhyped.
"Punguza Mizigo is a Bill that promises more than what it delivers (and) misleads people about its intentions. We do not know who Aukot sat with to generate that Bill. He simply wrote it, generated signatures and sent it to IEBC (Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission),” he added.
