A fortnight ago, Mr Okoth, a brother to Ken Okoth, was heckled in the presence of ODM leader Raila Odinga, with many pundits writing him off as a strong candidate.

On Saturday night, ODM party unveiled Mr Okoth as the flag bearer ahead of November by-election, and will now officially role campaigns. He garnered 4,382 votes.

"Thank you to all @TheODMparty members in Kibra for conducting yourselves like the democrats we have always known you to be. Thank you for your patience in the face of various challenges as you voted today. Congratulations ndugu Imran Okoth," wrote Edwin Sifuna.

He was followed by Peter Orero (1,218), John Milla Otieno (906), Ben Musungu (524), Christone Odhiambo (417), Tony Ogola (381), Stephen Okello (228), Brian Owino (127), Reuben Ojijo (52) and Eric Obayi (45).

But Imran relied heavily on the network created by his brother Ken Okoth and by the fact that he served as constituency manager during the entire period.

According to Muhamed Onyango, Mr Okoth used grassroot mobilisation skills, making his campaigns door to door and reaching out to friends.

"He wasn't making noise. He used his brother's network, grassroot mobilisation and friends to deservedly win the ticket. He understands the constituency given that he was constituency manager," he said.

"Iam going to use my little resources & connections that i have to campaign for my Muslim brother & @TheODMparty aspirant, Bernard (Imran) Okoth... In shaa Allah," he added.

Similar remarks were made by lawyer Steve Ogolla, who conceded that by the fact that Imran was serving in Ken Okoth's administration, it was going to be difficult to beat him.

"Congratulations Imran Okoth, a man truly fit for the job. A loyal servant, trained in the tradition of result-driven leadership stretching back to six years. As former CDF Manager, he is the true story behind the glory of Kibra's magical rise. He deserves support," he said.

He will now be facing Jubilee's McDonald Mariga, Eliud Owalo of ANC and Ramadhan Khamisi of Ford Kenya. ODM enjoys fanatic support in Kibra.
