Traders in Mombasa are counting losses after a fire broke out at Kongowea market early Sunday morning and destroyed the property of unknown value.
Reports indicate the fire broke up at the wee hours of Sunday, January 26 and razed down a section of the market.
The fire whose cause is yet to be determined razed down most of mitumba clothes stalls before it spread to other areas.
Kenya Red Cross through its social media handles, confirmed the fire break in a short statement after they had dispatched a team of rescuers.
"Fire incident reported at Kongowea Market, Mombasa. Response teams en route to the scene" read Kenya Red Cross''s tweet.
Radio Maisha reporter, Billy Miya was among the first people to share videos from the fire scene.
According to the reporter, firefighters who were at the scene were struggling to put out of the fire due to limited water
"Fire at Kongowea market Mombasa! Firefighters ren out of water hence the fire is spreading at an alarming speed!" he captioned the short video clip.
However, firefighters from Mombasa County, National Youth Service, among other agencies, managed to put out the fire, and by 7 am, everything had been calmed down.
This is not the first time fire has razed down the market. In 2018, fire razed down the market and destroyed the property of unknown value. The fire was later determined to have been caused by an electric fault.
Kongowea is the largest market in Mombasa County as well as the whole Coast region.
