A number of traders in Garissa have been left a sad lot after 22 of their camels got stuck in the mud and died on their way to the slaughterhouse.
Camels are treated with sentimentalism in North Eastern and a look at the faces of the traders who suffered the loss, one would simply tell that they are a disappointed lot. According to them, the animals died after a bus plying the Nairobi-Garissa- Wajir route hooted at the camels scaring them off the road, leading the camels into the mud.
Counting losses from the animals that were just bought from Bangali Market as only 100 survived while two had broken limbs after they were knocked down by the speeding bus. Following this development, the chairman of the Butchers Owners Association, Abdi Khalif vowed to sue the transport service company that owns the bus.
According to one of the members of the association, Abdi Bulle, 15 camels died before dawn and another 7 died as the herders tried to save them.
Bulle added that they tried to seek help from the county government to have a bulldozer that could pull the animals out of the mud but it was not successful.
