Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia has revealed that the government intends to construct a 540-kilometre road worth Sh30 billion from January 2020.
The road which has been dubbed as the 'Mau Mau' road will run from Kiambu to Nyeri counties.
Its starting point will be at Gataka, Limuru and the endpoint will be the Ihuru area.
The name of the road is derived from the 'Mau Mau' fighters and is been constructed in honour and memory of the freedom fighters.
It is alleged that the freedom fighters used the road frequently during the colonial days.
“Some of the fighters paid the ultimate price. They went into the mountains to fight and never came back. That is why the President said he would do the road and many people thought it was just a promise,” Macharia stated as quoted by The Star.
The CS, who spoke while speaking in Murang'a county further confirmed that President Uhuru Kenyatta will launch the construction of the road in January 2020.
The construction of the road is expected to provide manual jobs to the unemployed youth as the four contractors who will work on the road have been directed to use local labour.
The areas along the road are expected to experience positive economic growth.
The government is also planning to construct another road which will link Murang'a county and Rift Valley.
“By so doing, we will connect the Lapsset Corridor to the Northern Corridor which will bring more development to the county,” CS Macharia noted.
