According to a report by BBC the suspects were shot after they tried to snatch guns from the police at the scene of the alleged rape.

The suspects who were killed have been identified as Mohammad Areef, Jollu Shiva, Jollu Naveen, and Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu.

Shamshabad deputy commissioner of police N Prakash Reddy confirmed the killing, saying that two police officers sustained injuring in the incident.

“In the morning, at around 6-6.30, our persons have come to reconstruct the scene of the crime and the accused have tried to snatch their weapons, and there was a cross-fire. In this, all the four accused have died. Two policemen have been injured, " he was quoted by The Guardian.

The suspects reportedly punctured the tires of the scooter of the late rape victim before pouncing on her.

News of the killing of the suspects has elicited mixed reactions, with some seeing it as quick justice while others condemning it as a case of extrajudicial killing.

The chief minister of New Delhi Arvind Kejriwal held the view that the killings were sending the wrong signals.

“The rape cases that have come to light of late, people are angry whether it is Unnao or Hyderabad, so people are expressing happiness over the encounter,” he said. “It is also something to be worried about, the way people have lost their faith in the criminal justice system. Together all the governments will have to take action on how to strengthen the criminal justice system.”
