Ikinu chief Amos Kamau has assured residents of Ikinu Location that the tetanus vaccine that is being given to women is safe.
The chief also dismissed claims that the vaccine is a family planning drug.
Speaking on Tuesday at Ikinu Trading Centre during a tetanus awareness session, the chief said that the claims given by a Catholic Health Commission chairman is not correct.
Last week, Catholic Health Commission chairman Rev Paul Njiru questioned the safety of the vaccine. The priest had alleged that the vaccine is a family planning campaign.
“The vaccine is safe and I urge women between 19 and 49 years to have it. It is for your own health,” said Kamau.
Kamau said that the government has pumped a lot of resources into the tetanus campaign and urged the residents to welcome it.
Dr Ann Ndung’u, a clinical health officer from Ikinu Health Centre who is spearheading the tetanus campaign urged the residents to ignore the claims and have the vaccine.
She called upon all the women targeted to come up in larger numbers to receive the vaccine.
