Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Shollei has called for women empowerment in a bid to ensure that more women take up leadership positions.
Shollei made the remarks on Wednesday during an interview on Citizen TV's JKL show.
According to Shollei, the challenge facing Kenya is lack of enough qualified women leaders who could compete with men to take up leadership positions on an equal platform.
"That is why we want to increase more women in leadership, whether it is in appointive, nominative or elective positions so that we can build a pool of competent women," said Shollei.
The county MP further noted that, as women leaders, they have decided to join hands in promoting policies and initiatives which would create more space for mentoring as many women as possible to take up leadership roles.
The former Judiciary registrar opined that some women leaders can make it to elective positions after being given the necessary support and opportunities to enhance their leadership skills through avenues such as nominations by political parties.
She gave the example Jennifer Shamallah, who is a Jubilee nominated MP.
"She has built herself from the beginning and the party has decided that she is a formidable woman. Then they've nominated her," said the woman rep.
Shollei noted that she could fight for an elective position in the upcoming polls after establishing herself well.
