Deputy President William Ruto has congratulated athletes Rhonex Kipruto and Sheila Chepkirui for smashing world records at the Valencia Iberjia 10K road race.
Ruto, in a tweet, said that he is proud of the two for setting new records in the men’s and women’s races respectively.
He noted that the duo showed a spirit of commitment and resilience.
“Congratulations to Rhonex Kipruto and Sheila Chepkirui for breaking the men’s and women’s 10Km world record respectively in Valencia. You have made us proud, fly the flag with pride," Ruto tweeted on Sunday moments after the results of the contest were released.
Kipruto finished the race in a record time of 26:24, smashing Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei’s record of 26:38.
His compatriot Benard Kimeli took the second position after completing the race in 27:12.
The third position was taken by Julien Wanders of Switzerland after he completed the contest in 27:13.
On the other hand, Chepkirui clocked 29:42 to set a new world record.
The second and third positions were taken by Rosemary Wanjiru (Kenyan) 29:46 and Norah Jeruto (Kenya) 29:46.
