Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has come to the defense of embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko following his dramatic arrest on Friday.
Sonko was arrested in Voi on his way to Mombasa, just hours after the Director of Public Prosecutions issued an arrest warrant against him over graft claims.
However, while defending Governor Sonko in a facebook post, Owino said that the manner of his arrest does not befit his status and position even as he called for the arrest of a police officer who allegedly assaulted the County Chief.
" The police ought not to have manhandled Governor Sonko who is an elected leader. The police officer who assaulted Sonko must be arrested. One is innocent until proven guilty as envisaged in the apex of the law ( Constitution of Kenya 2010," the Embakasi East lawmaker said.
Previously, Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris and Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga criticized the manner in which the Governor was arrested.
Sonko has had run-ins with government institutions for the last couple of days over alleged corruption and misuse of public office for personal gains has always insisted that he is a victim of political witch-hunt even as he blames "cartels" for fighting him.
He will be arraigned in Court on Monday to answer to the charges.
