Garissa Township legislator Aden Duale has now tasked Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuru Aukot to explain how he managed to get a million signatures which endorsed Punguza Mizigo bill.
Speaking on Friday to Editors Guild and the Media Council in Kisumu, Duale also doubted criteria the Independent Election and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) used to verify the signatures.
“Do they have a procedure of verifying the signatures? I can go to Huduma Centre and collect signatures? Aukot needs to tell us how he got a million signatures,” he said as quoted by the Star.
He was also worried that the signatures might have been collected from other places without citizen's knowledge.
“What if he went to an MPESA shop to get signatures?” he posed.
Duale who was weighing in on the need to have laws enacted to seal loopholes in the constitution with the current debate on referendum taking shape further inquired how the bill should be handled at the county level.
"What does the approval process by counties hold? Who is the person who should introduce the Bill to the floor of the house? Constitutional lawyers are silent on this,” he said.
Aukot had managed to collect 1.2million signatures which were approved by the IEBC.
A number of counties which include Kirinyaga, Kiambu among others have already rejected the bill while Uasin Gishu and Turkana counties have passed.
