Speaking on Sunday, the PM appealed to the country's legislature to take the necessary steps that would force foreign troops out of Iraq, the Washington Post has reported.

Parliament itself passed a resolution to expel US troops.

"The government commits to revoke its request for assistance from the international coalition fighting Islamic State due to the end of military operations in Iraq and the achievement of victory," the resolution read as quoted by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

He expressed condemnation for the American strike that led to the deaths of Qassem Soleimani and his Iraqi associate Abu Mahdi al-Muhandas.

"What happened was a political assassination," Abdul Mahdi said of the U.S. strike as quoted by the Washington Post.

"Iraq cannot accept this. No foreign troops are allowed to conduct their own military actions inside Iraq, " he added.

Iraq now finds itself trapped between the US-Iran conflict unsure how to respond.

The US troops have been training their Iraqi counterparts to help them fight terrorists.

It is not yet clear what the implications on the relationship between Iraq and the US will be should US troops be forced out of Iraq.
