In a tweet on Monday, Khalwale told off the governors who have since distanced themselves with Sonko, asking them to go back to their counties and deliver.

"Governors must vacate their delusions of grandeur, retreat to their respective counties and work," Khalwale noted.

Khalwale noted that the presidency and the Senate were the only institutions mandated by the constitution to resolve challenges such as those facing Nairobi.

"Only the President & Senate have the constitutional mandate (Art. 192) to address the exceptional circumstances that the County Government of Nairobi is facing," he said.

In a statement on Sunday, the Council of Governors through its chair Wycliffe Oparanya said the council will seek a special sitting with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

"We are, however, aware of the uniqueness of the County Government and therefore shall reach out to President Uhuru Kenyatta to convene an emergency Summit to address the evolving situation,” stated Oparanya.

Sonko was arrested in Voi after an arrest warrant was issued by DPP Noordin Haji. He faces abuse of office charges and misappropriation of Sh357 million.
