A 22-year-old man lost his life on Tuesday afternoon after drowning in a dam in Tala, Matungulu sub-county in Machakos.

The deceased who was not identified immediately was in the company other young men who had gone to fetch water from the dam with an ox-cart when he decided to have a quick swim.

However, he was unable to stay afloat and he drowned.

The incident was confirmed by Tala Police Post Officer Commanding Station Samuel Nguyo who addressed journalists at the scene.

He confirmed that the deceased died after drowning. Nguyo added that the body of the deceased has not yet been found and a team of professional divers would help in searching for it.

He urged residents not to swim if they do not know how to do it as it poses a huge risk.

By the time of going to press, the body was had not been found yet. The search is expected to continue on Wednesday.

A year ago, residents of Tala had requested the county government to fence the dam.

This is in a bid to reduce drowning incidents in the area.
