Hundreds of travellers have flocked Eldoret town trying to book bus tickets so as to travel upcountry for Christmas in time.
Long queues were witnessed on Saturday morning as many locals strived to get a place in the few slots available. Majority of travellers who spoke to Hivisasa explained how difficult it is to get a space in a bus.
”I arrived here at 5 am and booked a ticket to travel to Kisii with my family, but due to congestion, we are being told the premium shuttle Nissan will arrive two hours from now, said Daniel Machoka, a traveller.
Despite some bus companies capitalizing on the congestion to hike fares, royal rift, kangaroo and great rift are among the few that have not doubled their charges.
“We have decided to charge normal fares this festive season so as to maintain good rapport with our customers”, said David Kinuthia, a premium shuttle driver in Eldoret.
Turbo traffic commandant David Morna cautioned drivers to be careful this festive season and avoid drinking and driving.
Briefing the media at Eldoret main stage on Saturday morning he maintained that tough actions will be taken against those drivers and vehicles that violate traffic rules in any way.
At the Eldoret main stage, many passengers had already booked tickets but the passenger vehicles were yet to arrive since they were on transit transporting other travellers.
As the norm has it, many Kenyans like travelling upcountry to join their family members for Christmas celebrations.
Inspector general of police Hillary Mutyambai recently warned passengers who are fond of boarding congested vehicles that traffic police will be on spot check for them.
