Kisumu-based Afro pop musician James Ngoje popularly known as Oliver Msanii has said he substituted gospel with secular music in order for him to do what he loved most.
In an interview in Kisumu on Wednesday, the musician who is currently hitting airwaves with his latest single 'Party' said his parents wanted him to do gospel, but his heart fell in love with secular music.
“I used to sing gospel back then, but I reached a point and decided to focus on secular because that is what I loved. Sometimes the society puts a lot of pressure to people to do things but time comes when one decides to do what he loves the most,” he said.
The musician is a popular figure among the youth in Nyanza’s urban areas due to his music that resonates with them.
He joined the secular music scene in 2017 with a track titled 'Kazi kwa Bidii', before releasing 'The Only One' and 'Go Gaga' in 2018.
His latest song, 'Party' is less than one week old, and has managed over 200 views on YouTube.
In the song, he has featured new entrants in the game such as Kevo Wills, Daddy Whizz and E'zars.
He says his intention is to groom upcoming artists with a view forming a band later on.
