As Kenyans express deep sorrow following the death of 13 people in a road accident in Awasi, NTSA has now raised concern over the increased number of road crashes in the country.

The State agency revealed that road accidents have claimed the lives of 2,672 people compared to 2,286 last year as of October 1.

While releasing the report on Friday, NTSA Director-General Francis Meja said that the number of private cars that have killed Kenyans is on the rise. He stated that the high number of accidents has been a subject of concern in the recent past.

“Two or three years ago, the public service vehicles were the second-highest contributor of road accidents after private motorists,” he said in Nairobi, as quoted by the Daily Nation.

“However, thanks to some of the interventions we have done, we have seen a shift where the PSV are now in position four," he added.

The number of pedestrians who were killed in road crashes also went up, with private vehicles claiming the lives of 702 people this year compared to 579 last year.

NTSA has asked road users to observe traffic rules to avoid accidents.
