Former Independent and Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner Dr Roselyn Akombe has reacted to the victory scored by ambassador-designate Mwende Mwinzi in the High Court.
Dr Akombe on Thursday congratulated Mwende Mwinzi after the High Court ruled that she cannot be forced to renounce her citizenship.
According to the former IEBC commissioner, who run into exile in 2017, the High Court ruling in favour of Mwende Mwinzi is a victory for Kenyans living in the diaspora and grappling with racism and discrimination overseas due to scarce opportunities in Kenya.
"Congratulations Mwende! to the millions of Kenyans in the Diaspora. Working daily to sustain thousands of households in Kenya. Enduring racism and discrimination in far-away countries due to lack of opportunities at home. Keeping the economy going with their remittances," Dr Akombe wrote.
Members of the parliamentary committee that vetted her demanded that Mwinzi renounce her citizenship before taking up a job as Kenya's ambassador to South Korea.
She was nominated by President Uhuru Kenyatta, a nomination that was approved a parliamentary vetting committee on condition that she does away with her American citizenship.
The High Court has taken back the case to the National Assembly to decide on the matter.
Mwende Mwinzi was born in the United States of America to Kenyan parents.
