Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia confirmed the shocking reports, saying law enforcement authorities headed to the scene immediately they got reports of the attack.

"I have heard of such an incident but I am headed to the scene...I am also liaising with officers on the ground.I'll give details soonest," Macharia told Nation.

Details around the said attack are still scanty.

Investigations are said to be underway to establish the exact circumstances of the attack and its motive.

This comes as Kenya continues to wage war in Somalia against the group that has been able to carry out a number of deadly attacks.

Lamu, where the attack is said to have happened, has witnessed a spate of attacks believed to have been carried out by the Somalia-based group said to have links with the Islamic State.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has long maintained that the war on the group will continue relentlessly untill Somalia is rid of the menace of terrorism. In 2015, the group staged an attack in Garissa University College that led to the deaths of at least 147 people.
