The chairperson of University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA) Ann Mwangi Mvurya issued a statement on Sunday on the recent government crackdown on betting firms.
The student leader recognized the fact that betting is not only a source of income for some of the people in society but also a source of revenue for the government.
She went ahead to plead with the government to put in place policies that will govern betting in the country instead of shutting it down.
“My plea to the government is that instead of resolving to close down these companies, they should regulate them to ensure that their earnings and contribution is reasonable and proportionate. Tax compliance should be mandatory and age restriction should also be increased to at least 25 years as we seek to protect our children and teenagers from ineffective life expectations,” Ann Mvurya’s statement on her Facebook page read.
Ann Mvurya also cited that the betting firms contribute to the provision of employment opportunity and thus paralyzing their activities will lead to unemployment.
The government has blocked pay bill numbers of some of the betting companies. President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday insisted that all betting companies should comply with the government rules and regulations.
