A section of farmers in Uasin Gishu County now wants the CS Agriculture to increase the proposed milk prices from Sh33 per litre to at least sh 45 per litre.
This comes after CS Agriculture Peter Munya on Wednesday directed the new KCC to buy milk from farmers at Sh33 per litre, up from Sh25, in a move aimed at boosting dairy farmers' morale.
Led by Uasin Gishu KFA director Kipkorir Menjo they said the amount is very small and cannot exhaust the milk in the market.
“I want to call upon the Agriculture CS Peter Munya to at least increase the buying price of milk from sh 33 per litre to at least sh 45 per litre, this will give morale farmers to supply all their milk,” said Menjo.
Menjo who spoke to the press in Eldoret town on Thursday said this will help to mop up the excess milk being held by farmers at the moment.
He, however, called on the CS Agriculture Peter Munya to ensure that there is no importation of milk noting that this will guard milk farmers.
“The government should increase the tax on imported milk which will reduce importation of Milk which will protect the farmer and the milk sector in general,” said the Uasin Gishu KFA Director.
