Former Mandera Senator Billow Kerrow has rebuked Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei over a proposal to have sitting governors not charged.
Cherargei argues Kenya should take a leaf from Nigeria where governors, alongside the president and vice president, are not taken to court while still in office.
The proposal, however, was scorned off by Kerrow who said it was shameful for the Senator to ask Kenya to follow in the steps on Nigeria, a country he claimed was one of the most corrupt globally.
He warned that should the proposal be passed, county bosses would go on a spree of embezzlement of public funds since they would be aware no legal step will be taken against them.
"What a shame! A leader wants us to bench with Nigeria, one of the most corrupt countries in the world. And why would Kenyans allow our leaders to loot lawfully, knowing they won't be charged?" Kerrow posed on Tuesday.
While backing his proposal, Cherargei claimed there was a plot by the executive and judiciary to strangle devolution following recent cases where three governors were barred from office over corruption allegations.
He referred to the ruling against governors Ferdinand Waititu (Kiambu), Mike Sonko (Nairobi) and Samburu's Moses Kasaine Lenolkulal.
“The ruling against the three governors shows devolution is under threat; we have even seen some government operatives addressing governors as provincial commissioners while the courts have issued rulings to appease the executive," said Cherargei, who chairs the powerful Legal Affairs and Human Rights committee of the Senate.
