A Mombasa Court has ordered that the old Sh1,000 currency notes used as exhibits in a drug case should be exchanged with the new generation notes.
The anti-narcotic detectives were ordered by Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate Martin Rabera to replace Sh77,000 which is being used as exhibits in the case.
Magistrate Rabera made the order on Friday following an application by Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecution Aloise Kemo who wanted the old generation notes be replaced before the September 30 deadline.
The magistrate said that old Sh1,000 notes which are being used as exhibits must be recorded and a certificate for exchange issued.
The government had issued an order for withdrawal of the old Sh1,000 notes by October 1 following the introduction of new notes and Kemo argued that the notes which are being used as exhibits will be obsolete after the deadline.
In the case, two suspects facing drug charges had been arrested by the police and the money was being used as exhibits.
Kemo, speaking outside the court said he has instructed that all the exhibits being held should be exchanged before the deadline.
“I have instructed all prosecutors within my jurisdiction to ensure the old notes of Sh1,000 being held by police detectives and ethics and anti-corruption commission EACC as exhibits exchanged with the new notes,” said Kemo as quoted by standardmedia.co.ke.
