Murang'a Senator Irungu Kangata has said the nation is not well prepared for disasters following the West Pokot landslide.
In an interview with Citizen TV on Tuesday, Kangata said time has come for county governments to put in place more measures to curb disaster in the nation.
He said county governments should up their game when responding to tragedy, adding that the increasing death toll in the West Pokot landslide indicates that the government lacks a good response system.
"We need to strengthen our evacuation process and mobilize rescue service through the county government. As we lament and blame the national government, governors have a major role in ensuring these services are provided to wananchi," he said.
Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, who spoke during the same interview, said Kenyans have not embraced environmental conservation.
He said it is unfortunate that Kenyans ignored the advice of the late environmentalist Wangari Maathai.
"The late Prof Wangari Maathai once said “Nature is very unforgiving and if we mess with it, it will come back to destroy us,” he said.
The death toll has risen to 43 as others are still missing.
“I have received reports from search teams that the death toll has risen to 43,” said West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo.
Rescue and relocation operations are currently ongoing with an aim of ensuring no one else is affected.
