A Court in Bondo has acquitted two journalists who were arraigned to answer charges of obstructing police officers.
Brian Ondeng from Kenya News Agency and Geoffrey Oguma from Radio Nam Lolwe were being accused that in December 2018, they obstructed police officers who were conducting their official duties.
It is alleged that the two journalists were in Bondo town to cover a story that involved the recovery of goods that had been auctioned by a shylock firm.
During the incident, the court heard that the two journalists tried to block the officers who were arresting the shylock and recovering the auctioned goods.
The court further heard that the journalists were arrested and allegedly assaulted by the police.
Principal Magistrate Edwin Wasike in his ruling said that the prosecution failed to provide evidence that the two journalists obstructed the police from discharging their duties.
“I have carefully considered both the submissions by the prosecution and the defence and concluded that the two journalists were only curious about the incidence and had the intentions to cover the arrests where a shylock was being arrested and therefore had no intention to obstruct the police,” ruled Wasike as quoted by Standard.
