Speaking during an inspection of various projects at the county, Waititu claimed that he saw more than 2,000 youths from his county behind bars because of different offenses.

He said he will fight for their release as long as he remains in power, and promised to assist those arrested over petty offenses, but failed to raise the required fine.

“I saw our people being eaten by lice and bedbugs over petty offenses and I have decided to make sure they are released from the prison.

“It was God’s grace that I was taken there to meet and see my people suffering in remand. The situation in there is unbearable and I have to do something to help my people,” he said as quoted by Standard.

He said the conditions at the courts are unbearable, adding that something must be done with immediate effect to rescue the youths perishing in prisons because of petty offenses.
